The underrated stock survey! Submit your picks for the community to track

Following on the previous tracking post (http://redd.it/i2mmzg) and the highly upvoted request from DJ-Ascii , I've set up this post for another round of underrated or undervalued stock picks.
As before, let us know what stock you believe is underrated and a consistent winner that has done well for you, or you believe will do well going forward.
In order to make this easier to track please use the following guidelines for submitting.
  1. Only one submission per comment. You can make multiple comments, but please only submit one stock per comment.
  2. Please include at least the ticker and the company name. Feel free to explain why you think this is a good stock.
I'll add these new picks alongside the old survey so as to update you on each portfolio over time. Don't worry about any overlaps.
Edit 1: I've compiled everyone who has posted so far, but I'll look out for any final additions tomorrow. The list will then be locked EOD on Friday the 7th of August, and all prices will start from there.
Edit 2: All picks have now been locked down and consolidated into the list below. Stocks are sorted in alphabetical order of their company name and the ID corresponds to the approximate order in which they were submitted. The next update will be in 30 days.

I will tell you exactly what is going on here, this is critical information to understand if you are going to make money in this space. How prices work, and what moves them - and it's not money invested/withdrawn.

/edit: Hi /all. While I have your attention, I want to take 5 seconds of your time and bring some exposure to something that is threatening our existence as the human race. If you aren't interested, please skip down to the main article. I'm talking about finding a way to live sustainably on this planet, regenerative agriculture, where we get our food from, and how we can make sure that our kids and grandkids have something left once we leave.
Please consider reading up on Permaculture, sustainable living, Forest gardening, Backyard Chickens, etc. Consider following what I did and do it for yourself. This all used to be a useless lawn.
Bored for a night? Go watch "Sustainable" on Netflix.
Look into people like Geoff Lawton, Mark Shepard, Sepp Holzer, these people are going to save us.
Want to make a small change yourself? Grow a tomato plant on your balcony in a pot. Reduce transport of the tomatoes you eat, and make ~$50 per plant in saved money. Want to do something bigger? Plant a fruit tree in your backyard. Maybe two. Maybe a raspberry bush. You are now part of saving the human race.
If everyone reading this planted a fruit tree, or even some wild flowers, we could save the bees.
While you are at it, planting a fruit tree has been shown to be one of the best investments on the planet. There's pretty much no investment on the planet that is more financially lucrative (while still being nearly bullet-proof safe) than planting a fruit tree.
You can get a tree at an end of sale auction for literally 5-10 bucks, and that tree will produce THOUSANDS of dollars of fruit for you in it's lifetime. Go spend $200 bucks at an end of season sale, plant 10-20 trees (if you have room), and that $200 will be worth tens of thousands of dollars of saved money.
Do it right, set it up right and it's almost no work because you offload the work to nature - as it has done for the last few billion years. Go learn how, let me show you how. If you do it right, it's zero work after you have planted and wood-chipped, and all you do is pull dollars off a tree.
Original post starts below. I apologize for the shilling of Permaculture, but I think loss of topsoil will impact us all if we don't reverse it soon. We need soil, we need bees, we need food. We need to stop buying December Bananas in Canada. We need to start supporting local permaculture sustainable farms. We need to do this or we may not make it, and our grandkids stand no chance.
I also expended the "now what happens" section, to explain how these pullbacks are a good thing, make crypto more stable, and why we keep seeing larger ceilings after every pullback... this stuff is really important for you to make money on this thing, if that's your goal....
I've made a similar post in a few spots, and this is something that is absolutely critical for people to understand... what impacts price, and what is going on lately. Price has only a very minor correlation with money invested, and a major correlation with opinion.
... and Humans are an emotional bunch.
So what drives price of any commodity, crypto, gold, pizzas, whatever? The money invested in it, right? Kind of, but not really. What if I told you that you could theoretically raise bitcoin from $15k to $20k by spending $1, and lower it from $25k to $1k by spending the same $1? Crazy right?
AN EXAMPLE
This is going to start out slow, I want to make sure I get everyone on the same page before I pick things up and lift the curtain. Stick with me here....
This is an example to help illustrate why prices aren't driven by money invested, but rather consensus and opinion. Lets imagine the following exists (we will use bitcoin as an example, but this is how everything on the planet works)
Lets say Bitcoin is currently priced at $10k (the last sale). From $11k to $99k, every $1k there is someone with a sell order of 1 full bitcoin. From $9k to $1 dollar, every $1k on the way down there is someone with a buy order of 1 full bitcoin.
So, right now if you wanted to buy bitcoin you have several options... meet the lowest seller's price of $11k, or, put your own buy order up, above the highest buyer's bid order (overcut them). If you decide to just place an order, the price doesn't change. If you decide the buy the $11k bitcoin, now bitcoins value is $11k, with a new lowest sell offer of $12k, and a highest buy bid of $10k. Someone else comes in an overcuts the buy bid and puts 1 BTC for sale for $11k. No trades are made until someone matches a buy/sell.
Okay, that's kindergarten stuff, most people here understand that. So how much money drove the price up in this situation? $11k, and BTC price raised 11/10, 1.10, or 10% from the last sale. Now the entire marketcap of BTC raised 10% (last sale multiplied by circulating supply). So it takes $11k to drive a 10% increase, right? Not at all. Lets look at what happens when news is released.
News comes out that Warren Buffet thinks bitcoin is a scam, a bubble, and he wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole because he only invests in things he understands and he doesn't understand crypto. People panic everywhere, and believe "this guy is smart, I'm overvaluing this thing".
Suddenly people don't want to buy this scam anymore, and the buy orders for $11k, $10, and $9k are taken down.
At the same time, the people wanting to sell start to panic and just want out. The guy at $32k (who just had that offer up "just incase it moons") drops down to $11k sell order. The guy at $12k, who was the lowest, now undercuts him to $10k.
The other buyers see the sellers undercutting and think that if these people want out, why am I buying in. The $8k guy pulls his offer, and so do the $7k, $6k and $5k guys. The highest offer is now $4k.
The sellers panic further and the $14k guy undercuts the $10k guy and puts up a $9k sell. The $15k, 17k and 11k guys all see this flurry of panic and now a storm undercutting is triggered, to $8k, $7k, and $6k. The $8k order pulls his again and goes down to $5k.
The price on the buy and sell orders has moved around a ton, but no sales have actually happened yet. Technically, BTC is still "worth" $11k, and the market cap reflects that. All this horseshit has happened, and it only happened in 10 seconds, but the price hasn't moved yet.
The $27k guy wakes up and checks his phone. He had a $27k offer just incase the price moved also, and he also only has a tiny infinitesimal fraction of a BTC. Well, he decides "he's out" and fills $1 worth of the part of the $4k guys buy offer.
The latest price information is now updated, and BTC fell from $11k to $4k price per BTC with the movement of a single dollar.
This is exaggerated example, but this is what moves price. Not money in vs money out. The ONLY THING that moves price is perception.
OPINION FLOW AND NOT MONEY FLOW
Now the above example only happens if everyone simultaneously believe the same thing... this the asset they are holding is a steaming turd. What happens in reality is there's no black and white, it's shades of gray. It's flow in vs flow out. But again, not flow MONEY, but rather OPINIONS.
If 66% of the holders of something all of a sudden unanimously decide that their asset is overvalued, then they panic sell. Even if 33% of the people decide they are going to buy up as much as these panic sellers sell, if the panic is strong enough, and they are slitting eachother's throat to sell, then the buyers just happily sit and let them do that, and time their buys in. Very little money has to actually change hands in order for this price to crash, all that matters is the FLOW OF OPINION has to be swift and violent, and in majority. The sellers will leapfrog eachother on the way down, faster than the buyers scoop up their sales, and the net result is a crashed price.
Note, this happens both ways... fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) as well as overhyped FOMO (Fear of missing out).
So now what happens?
Time goes by and all holders opinions of their asset hasn't changed. They still think it's worth $11k and they got great deals scooping up what these sellers were selling. The weak hands have left the market and have been replaced with holders. Overall, now a higher percentage of holders believe in the product they are holding and are unwilling to sell for the panic prices of the last week. Panic sellers were also replaced by new money, people who have wanted in for a while and are now in on their perceived ground floor.
Also, people who bought BTC at $1 ten years ago and have been looking for an exit to cash profits have now been replaced by either long term holders, or by these new people who are thrilled to have finally entered, and they are looking to hold long.
So what happens on pullbacks? The number of people waiting to jump off the ship has decreased. The new ground floor is established. Are we done? Who knows, this could go on for another year, but what matters is that people who want off are getting off and people that want on are getting on.
People who have panic sold and never believed in this in the firstplace... people who have wanted out for 10 years... they have been replaced by people who are now getting in on THEIR GROUND FLOOR, and are going to be holding long. The market is suddenly increasingly more stable today than it was yesterday, even though prices are down.
This is a good thing. This is why crypto keeps bouncing back from pullbacks and reaches new higher ceilings and floors each time. Old money who wanted out, and new panic holders, they are gone. They are replaced with adopters, holders, believers in this technology. These people aren't selling anytime soon, because they believe that this thing is going to revolutionize the world. Every crash brings more of these people in, and removes more panic sellers out.
Moving forward
Now news releases start coming out about how stock ETFs are being created, NASDAQ index funds, bank support, government support. Companies are using this tech, and companies who use blockchain for transportation are putting non-blockchain companies out of business.
The people on the outside looking-in feel they are missing out. They now start coming in and buying. They start overpricing eachother on their buy orders, and eventually it gets close enough to a sell order that someone decides they are just going to meet the sell price. The sale goes through.
Sellers (HODLERs) see this action, and they start pulling sell orders off the table almost as fast as they fill. Sure some trades go through, and incoming money is driving the price up as market orders are filled. But what's also happening is people are seeing this flurry of volume, and sellers are pulling sell orders and placing them higher.
Junk coins and pump and dump scam coins are dying by the millions. In their ashes, good solid technology projects whose coins have fundamental economic reasons for growth, these are rising. Corporate partnerships continue forming. The real world continues to create actual use cases. Companies start storing more and more corporate information on blockchain. Public companies use blockchain to store scientific research (See Canadian Research Council announcements), and blockchain acts as a Library of Alexandria. People can travel out of country without any monetary exchange, using their chosen cryptocurrency to buy the things they need abroad. The world is slowly actually USING this technology.
Money is coming in, but more importantly, OPINION IS CHANGING. Literally nothing could have happened in terms of fundamentals, partnerships, etc... this can all be driven entirely emotional, so long as it's wide-spread and strong. Infact, the market could THEORETICALLY rebound in this way from $4000/BTC to $1 MILLION PER BITCOIN by the sale of ONE PENNY. $4000 sound low? Does that number make you uncomfortable? We may go that low. We may not. If we do, I'm not panicking and selling, I'm buying more.
SO WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS? and where are we going?
A lot of new money has come in from Nov-Jan, and they don't really know what they are investing in. Sure some of them have done great research and are smart investors but most people aren't and isntead they are buying Symbols and Names and trading on speculation. They are treating their favorite coins like a sports team, and will follow them irrationally off a cliff.
These new people came in and invested in cryptocurrency because their OPINION was heavily influenced in Nov, Dec, Jan, from media. They saw this money making machine called crypto. They were willing to pay huge, ride the wave up, keep buying, etc. They were "ground floor adopters" and were going to get rich.
They outnumber the old money by A LOT. Their OPINION MATTERS. It matters the most.
To keep this in perspective, they are also a VAST MINORITY of "new money" that will enter the game in the next decade. This cycle will continue over and over and over.
Their opinion rose nearly unbounded and price rose accordingly. Market cap rose from 10B to 750B, and it could have been VERY LITTLE actual money that did this. How much did it need to be though? Literally ONE PENNY, theoretically. All that matters in moving price is MOMENTUM OF OPINION. I believe it has been estimated that as low as 6B USD was responsible for the bull rush.
These people then started hearing "Bubble", "Scam", Fake news about governments banning. They don't understand how technology wins, always. Crypto is beyond government control. If they could have stopped Bitcoin they would have done it already.
WHO IS DRIVING ALL THIS?
Most investment opportunities go first to "accredited investors". You need to have multimillions in order to get in on the ground floor for most stock IPOs, and we're seeing that start to happen with coin ICOs. Bitcoin was a joke for the first few years, while lunatics picked it up. At this point, it was really too late to get in "early", and who would have wanted to anyways, it was all still a joke. So Wallstreet, banks, governments have generally watched on the sidelines as average Joes who were crazy enough to be early adopters and toss $100 on fake internet money slowly became millionaires.
Not only that, but the idea of blockchain started to become understood. The power and value in it became understood. Not only as a way to track "monetary value" but for many other applications as well. Platforms were created, business uses brainstormed, products started being made. This thing started taking off, and wasn't a joke anymore. But regardless, big money wasn't in on the ground floor. They have stakeholders opinions to think of, and what do they say to investors when they lose all their money on magic internet points?
But they have woken up now. This thing has "popped" many times now and keeps recovering. This thing won't die. could they have been wrong all along? If they want in, how do they get in? They are no dummies, they have been controlling the world their whole lives? Look at the media experiment that Trump is doing? He is testing just how we work... you can do literally anything and we remember it for like 30 seconds, until the next news story comes out. We change opinions very easily. We are swayed very easily. We are their puppets. Media controls the world. They know their way in.
They have ONE WEAPON against cryptocurrency.
YOUR OPINION OF IT.
And they know it.
Media.
That's why FUD is so powerful and needs to be respected. It's why we need to read more than titles on news articles. We need to question what we read, whether it's good news or bad news. We need to think about "what are the motives of the person saying this to me". Does the government have a conflict of interest when they state that crypto is gambling? Do they have skin in the game?
What about wall street? Does WEISS ratings possibly have incentive to come out with poor ratings? Do banks have incentive to lock accounts in order to "protect" customers from "unsafe investments" when their entire business model revolves around holding as much of your money as possible and making money off it? Do you think banks have any super secret hidden interest in preventing you from storing your money elsewhere? I'm not sure, maybe you can critically think about that.
Just understand that this goes both ways. When crypto is booming and Fox news is showing people how to buy $4 ripple on prime time, you may want to start putting in some stop loss orders. When the suicide hotline is stickied at the top of /cryptocurrency and everyone is panic selling, you may want to start picking up some firesale deals.
So, the question is this... Is crypto undervalued or overvalued at it's price today? Where is the price going long term? I'm not talking about it's use case, I'm talking about in the court of public opinion, where is THAT going? Because THAT is what is going to drive price in the future.
Without a crystal ball, this is of course impossible to know. Do your own research and form your own opinion. It could very well be that the technology having a use-case will in and of itself drive opinion, and thus price. But make sure you understand that it's not the technology itself, it's not the value of the business itself, it's not the use case itself that will drive price, it is the publics OPINION of that thing which drives price. They are intertwined, but they are NOT the same thing.
TLDR: VERY VERY little money has to move around in order to swing prices drastically, up or down. Money in and out doesn't drive price, OPINION does. How do you let the news you read impact your opinion? How are you being played (on both sides, shilling and FUD).
Something is only worth what people think it's worth. Often that's based on reality, value, business, money, but often it's entirely emotional.
Structure your portfolio in a balance, intelligent way, using risk methodology.. Invest money you are willing to lose. Support legitimate technology and teams who are actively driving their product to completion, coding, and marketing. Stop trying to make money overnight in pump and dump scams, or pyramid schemes.
Every day, take one coin, do a deep dive on it, learn it inside and out. Look into their team and their past. Do that every day for a year, and you just learned 365 coins inside and out. Ask yourself the following key questions:
Have those members consistently jumped ship on previous projects? Is that where you want to invest in? Is their team capable of executing on their vision? Are they trying to solve world hunger, and their team is a few 16 year olds in a garage? How active is their github? Are they adding chunks of code regularly, or is a ghost town? Are they marketing their product at all? Or is marketing the only thing they are doing?
What are the economics of their coin itself? Is it required to be used to gain access to their technology? Are there burns? How premined is it, and what portion do the founders hold?
What about their vision? Are they trying to solve a problem that needs to be solved? What are the economics of that problem and how much money does the solution potentially save clients?
These are all questions you should be asking when you give your money to someone else. We're a lot more stable than we were - a correction was bound to happen. Too much early money wanted to cash in profits. These people have been replaced by new money who is holding on their own ground floor. The whole industry in general is still in very early stages. Rest assured that anyone reading this is still very much an early adopter. Just make sure you are investing in actual technology, and supporting capable teams, and not buying air. Buy the Googles and Amazons of Crypto, not the pets.com or flooz.com of cryptos.
Happy investing everyone.

Cryptocurrencies and the circle of competence

A quick note to investors that believe the intrinsic value of bitcoin is 0 because they can't do a DCF on it: this isn't the place to argue with me about it. I suggest you read a bit more about what it actually is (hint: not a currency). I've defended its value in plenty of other posts on this sub. It's a $40+ billion market, so at least a few people agree with me. I welcome you to short the crypto of your choice if you think it's worth nothing. This is a post for folks that believe that cryptocurrencies have at least some discernible value and are considering investing in them.
If we have a strength, it is in recognizing when we are operating well within our circle of competence and when we are approaching the perimeter. – Warren Buffett
Given the tripling of the cryptocurrency market cap in the last few months and the 3- to 10-fold increases in virtually every major altcoin, cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and of course Bitcoin have been getting a stunning amount of attention in the press and on this subreddit recently.
If you follow the cryptocurrency world closely, you know that there have been a huge amount of dubious ICOs (initial coin offerings) on the market recently. It's an explosive time in crypto.
It's also a frustrating time for many long term bitcoiners and crypto fans, because we're faced with a barrage of questions from outsiders who see the returns and want to buy in to the "next big thing" and make a quick buck. This is a warning to those people.
Everyone is a genius is a rising market. It's hard to go wrong these days in crypto. Even coins of dubious merit like Ripple, Dogecoin, Stellar, NEM were pumped 5 times without any fundamental change. Speculators/investors have thrown money at crypto indiscriminately and efficient markets have 100% broken down. The altcoin pump right now is roughly comparable to the Dot Com crisis of the early 2000s.
  1. New tech promises to change the world
  2. Investors jump in on hype and promises
  3. A surge of IPOs (ICOs) occurs to capitalize on this
  4. "Greater fool" traders pile in, thinking they can make money even if the underlying is unsound
  5. Analysts claim "this time is different" while seasoned old hands refuse to participate
  6. Tech is proven not to be as developed as everyone thinks, market tanks
  7. Select few decent companies survive, all the trash is destroyed
  8. Tech eventually fulfills expectations, 10 years later, but none of the investors from the early days make money on it
However, canny (and skeptical) investors can still make money on crypto, as cryptocurrencies are inevitable, and will continue to expand and proliferate, even when the altcoin crash comes.
Something to realize first of all is that the crypto market is heterogeneous. It has straightforward cryptocurrencies (bitcoin, litecoin, dash, monero), smart-contract cryptos (ethereum, ethereum classic) and a whole bunch of crypto tokens that follow dedicated platforms (golem, augur, steem). Not mentioned are ripple and stellar because they aren't really cryptocurrencies at all.
The investing theses for all of these categories is radically different. The measure of success for a currency or store of value is adoption, merchant use, low volatility, a large network, and real world acceptance as something worth owning. Bitcoin has this right now, which is why it's more than 50% of the ecosystem, and none of its competitors are even close. Monero, Zcash, and Dash are a special case in that they try and make transactions anonymous and privacy, allowing for use cases on the darknet markets, for instance.
The tech underlying bitcoin is essentially sound, although it is having a scalability crisis, which you should read about. It can't right now serve as a currency which will buy you a cup of coffee - the transaction fees are too high. However if you want to send $200,000 from Mexico to Indonesia or China to the Philippines, you can do it within 20 minutes, and with fees of a few dollars. And if you want to store your wealth in a vault that is totally secure, and cannot be debased by a central bank, bitcoin is a good bet. This is highly relevant to folks in India that just had cash abolished, to Venezuelans, to Argentines, to Cypriots, to Nigerians, anywhere local currencies are weak and volatile. The potential value of a competing cryptocurrency lies in whether it can improve materially on bitcoin, whether it means incorporating off-chain scaling (segwit with litecoin), making it more private and fungible (monero), automating governance (decred), and so on.
Then there are cryptoassets that incorporate smart contracts. These – ethereum and its derivatives – exploded when the SEC denied the Bitcoin ETF back in march and bitcoiners got worried and started diversifying. This is the market segment that is highly risky, even by crypto standards, in my opinion. Ethereum is a protocol that allows contracts to self-enforce. Programming power to run the contracts is paid for with ethereum. Two parties agree to a contract, and it then self-executes. It's secured by a decentralized computing network of ethereum miners, so the contracts cannot be shut down by a government or corporation. It's pretty clever. Last year, a $150+ million contract was drawn up with ethereum, which would act like a venture capital fund, picking good investments just based on the votes of the token holders. This was called a Decentralized Autonomous Organization, and it was hacked before it could do anything. Well, it was exploited based on the code and so the exploit was totally "fair" given that the contract was meant to be inevitable, once agreed to. However, the creators of Ethereum didn't like the idea of losing $50 million, so they decided to collectively agree to amend the rules of the protocol itself (violating "Code is Law"), and jump onto a new one, which they would also call Ethereum, although it was really Ethereum 2.0. Some people got upset by this, because they thought that immutability and not arbitrarily rolling back the code was more important than some investors losing money because of poorly written code. They created Ethereum Classic, which is the original Ethereum chain. This wasn't what the Ethereum 2.0 folks thought would happen, but it did happen, so there are two competing Ethereum chains now.
Eventually, lots of decentralized apps were funded, via tokensales. A development team would say: "we're going to use ethereum to create a decentralized cloud computing/AI/prediction/gambling/timestamping/social media network." And then investors would buy the tokens, expecting that eventually the dev team would deliver, and the tokens would be in demand, since they would be required to use the network. It's a bit like buying in-game-currency when the game is announced, anticipating that the game would be wildly popular and you'd be able to sell it on later at a profit or acquire it cheaply to buy in-game items later on. However, many of us think that the promises are a bit extravagant, and that investors in these ICOs are probably going to lose money. The incentives aren't well aligned. Founders can just not deliver and run off with the money, and there's no regulatory body to enforce that. And for Ethereum more broadly, many people are worried that the turing-completeness of the language will mean it will face serious threats and unforeseeable hacks, like with the DAO. Finally, Ethereum has increased from around $20 to $90 in a matter of months, which raises the question of whether a) the market realized its true value or b) it was pumped on speculation. There's a huge set of unknowns with a smart contract currency, and virtually none of the promised dapps are up and running right now, and the ones that are haven't really attracted large userbases or delivered. This is because the tech is in its infancy, and the developers are still learning how to use it properly. So we won't know if these sorts of decentralized networks are even possible to create on the timelines that investors are expecting. Therefore, ethereum investors buying it on the promise of the realization of this tech in the near future are almost guaranteed to be disappointed. Additionally, ethereum is making the switch to the largely untested Proof of Stake algorithm, which will change incentives that secure the network. This brings me to my key point:
Stay within your circle of competence. You can grow your circle – slowly. Cryptoassets are almost impossibly complex to grasp with just a cursory look. Investing in them requires weeks of reading and a very skeptical view.
The above was an introduction to cryptocurrencies, the different ones on offer, and why investing in ethereum is not the slam dunk everyone thinks it is. This portion of the post will tell you about the kind of due diligence you need to do if you want to invest, rather than speculate, in crypto.
The first thing to mention is that passive investing in crypto has historically been a terrible strategy. Just buying bitcoin almost always outperformed. This was due to the poor set of altcoins, and the size of bitcoin's almost insurmountable network effect. This sort of changed in March and April when bitcoin's dominance went from 80% to ~50%, and it remains to be seen if this will persist or not. But the point is, buying the index is usually an awful strategy in crypto, particularly because there are so many truly awful projects out there.
So what does it take to invest responsibly in cryptocurrencies? It requires at least a basic understanding of three disciplines: public-private key cryptography; programming, and how open-source projects function; and economics, particularly game theory and the quantity theory of money. This is why is is so difficult to apprehend easily: because very few people actually boast a sincere understanding of these three topics. I certainly don't.
You need to be able to determine whether the tech is actually going anywhere, and whether the task the developers have set themselves is possible or realistic. You need to know how open source networks are governed, and which models strike the best balance between efficiency of decision-making and fair consensus. You need to be able to measure the inflation schedule of the cryptocurrency, and see whether your coins are going to inflated away. You need to be able to make plausible guesses about the potential market for the crypto and estimate future values. Note that the payoff structure is not equity-like. It's more like early stage venture capital, or buying loss-making biotech companies. Here's my checklist of questions to answer, ordered by importance:
  • Does the project offer a significant improvement over its nearest competitor, or a reasonable chance of success in its stated aim? Is there a demand for this project? Does it have a concise and reasonable goal? (Narrower goal: higher likelihood of success).
  • Is the development team competent? Are they committed to the coin? What's their track record? Is is an active dev team? Do they have a roadmap for the future? Are they transparent about goals?
  • How is the development team funded? Is the currency corporate-backed? Is the funding transparent? Was the coin significantly premined? (Usually bad) Are developers paid via iterative community project crowdfunding? (Usually good).
  • What is the governance structure of the currency? Who holds ultimate control over decisionmaking? How are decisions made? Are they transparent? Are mining/developer incentives aligned?
  • Does the asset have acceptance and use today? Does it have a functioning use case? If it doesn't, does it have a decent chance of being accepted?
  • Has the asset's "market cap" tripled or quintupled in the last few months? Was this based on any fundamental changes (new software releases, etc) or just speculation?
  • What are the transaction volumes like? (Hint: divide market cap by monthly averaged daily on-chain tx volume to find a consistent ratio) What's the ratio of on-chain transaction versus exchange speculation? Has price gone up independent of transaction volumes?
  • How long has the asset been around? Think of the Lindy effect. Older is usually better.
  • What's the community like? Is there censorship? Does it have an active subreddit? Do the developers answer questions? Are they accessible? How big is the github community? (Hint: you can divide market cap by github commits to find a comparable ratio).
  • Are you psychologically able to hold this coin in a 90% downturn? Is this a high conviction thesis or are you betting on being able to sell it to a greater fool?
How long did it take you to learn about investing in equities? Reading balance sheets, running DCF and DRI models, figuring out how to value a stock based on comparables? Years? How many mistakes did you make before you figured out how to be responsible?
Cryptos are an asset class that is both radically different from anything that has existed before. They are also incredibly heterogeneous, as I argued above. It also leads to cultism – so bitcoiners generally take a dim view of ethereum, and vice versa. Monero fans generally don't like dash, and so on. You have to keep your mind open to understand new opportunities as they arise, and to stop yourself becoming too mentally invested in your project of choice. The vast majority of projects will fail within 5 years, so becoming overly certain of the success of one will probably devastate you. If you can stay balanced, stay honest about your crypto's chances of success and adoption, not get tunnel vision, and not take overly risky positions, you have a good chance of not losing everything. Remember the payoff structure. Heavily rightward skewed. A ton of cryptos earn no return and a select few earn an absurd (1,000-10,000x) return.
None of this is necessary if you just want to invest randomly in one of the top ten cryptos. That's the strategy of 95% of investors today. Pick a coin and go. If it's not bitcoin, I can pretty much guarantee you'll lose money. The newer, the worse.
I've not made an effort to convince you that cryptos have intrinsic value. If you've made it this far, you probably think they're worth something at least. However, they're probably not worth as much as the market is pricing them at right now. Especially not those in the ethereum family. I'm not going to tell you what to invest in, because that would defeat the purpose of this post. I'm telling you to do your due diligence before blindly buying a crypto. And that due diligence on ethereum is as complex and difficult as Tesla or Amazon DD. And that your skills in equity valuation are pretty much useless in this asset class. My circle of competence doesn't extend to options or lean pork futures, so I don't touch those. I suggest that until you really feel comfortable in crypto, you don't buy randomly.
Summative thoughts:
  1. Investing in crypto is hard
  2. 90% of people that invest at market peaks will lose money
  3. You have to extremely skeptical and invest in high-conviction positions
  4. Cryptos are exhibiting bubbly behavior right now, it's a pretty bad time to pick one out
  5. Cryptos are nothing like equities but they do have real value
  6. Cryptos are the future, but almost none of these coins will survive 10 years
  7. The older the better
  8. Governance is key
  9. These are speculative positions, only invest what you can tolerate losing
  10. You can make money investing in cryptos
  11. Passively investing in cryptos doesn't work
  12. It's a winner takes most market, there won't be 1 crypto that wins. There will be different cryptos for different use cases.
edit: deleted chart with probabilities of success because of subjectivity and oversimplification.
edit2: I've been overwhelmed with PMs so bear with me. also, please forgive any spelling errors on this post. I wrote it in one frenzied sitting.
edit3: I knew I would get a fair amount of resistance from ethereum investors (even though I attempted to keep my post as balanced as possible) but I was unprepared from the breathtaking volume of spam and diversity of attacks. One particular user has made 30 comments in this thread. I don't have a stake in ETC, period. The post is 3000 words long and most of it is about how to properly do your due diligence in a crypto. if ethereum fares poorly by standard due diligence metrics, then perhaps your issue is deeper than one post on /investing.
final edit: there have been some broken-hearted ethereum fans very busy organizing brigades against this post, and attacking me personally, and so on. It's all very incovenient. I can tell that I struck a nerve. This post isn't really about ethereum - it's about how to do research in crypto, and why you can't expect to profit handsomely without that due diligence. I mentioned ethereum because there are 3 or 4 breathless posts on here a day about its stunning gains and whether it's worth investing in. My answer: read about it first, from a diverse set of sources. A final note: I do not own any ethereum classic, I have never owned ethereum classic. I brought it up because it is part of the ethereum story, and an example of what happens when you have a contested hard fork. I do hope that ethereum succeeds, I am just cautioning against over exuberance.

Reminder this is r/stock and not a crypto sub; feedback welcomed.

The reason why we have a rule against crypto discussions is because this is stocks where we discuss stocks.
Last year we had a surge of comments that were literally "buy bitcoin" in almost every single post on stocks, and it wasn't just a single comment, sometimes you would find 10 users stating the exact same thing, "buy bitcoin" or going into details on how to mine bitcoins; this is spam & off topic.
Also Bitcoin is not a stock, just like discussing buying & reselling sneakers is not a stock, these discussions are off topic and that reason alone was enough to remove posts & comments. Unfortunately this wasn't enough, so we created a rule (see sidebar) against discussing crypto with a link to a sub where you could; we also made an automod rule to deal with this.
If you want to discuss investing in general, you can go to investing, which is mentioned in the sidebar (on mobile by tapping "about this community"). If you want to discuss crypto & mining you can go to CryptoCurrency.
Below is the automod message I wrote, please give me your criticism & feedback on this. I made it informative to deal with some misconceptions & misinformation (including GPU mining).
You can also see that when a stock is related to crypto, I've whitelisted that stock (including this post) so you can discuss crypto as long as that discussion is related to the stock (or this post), so it's not 100% removal; it also only affects top level comments:
Sorry your comment (link to comment) in /stocks was automatically removed as per rule 6: Bitcoins & cryptocurrenies should be discussed in CryptoCurrency.
This probably only affects your comment if it was a top level suggestion. Keep in mind this is stocks and people come here for stock suggestions.
We've whitelisted some discussions on crypto, but not all such as bitcoin & crypto holding ETFs and futures (explanation below). However we allow crypto discussions on the following: Coinbase IPO, Square INC, Overstock, XNET, MARA, GCAP, NVDA, AMD, and Kodak; this list will always be updated (see below to what won't be included).
A list of the rules can be found here, and if you're new to stocks please see the wiki and/or read this post.
If you're just wondering if cryptocoins are an investment, read here.
Please note:
Thanks for understanding.
Again this post is whitelisted so you can mention any crypto related keyword (as long as it deals with this post), and please provide your feedback which will help me whitelist more stocks/keywords; again keep in mind this is stocks.
Update: Based on feedback I updated the bullet point regarding the size of crypto market vs stock market, thanks u/yourslice
Update2: Based on information provided by u/mike_996, I'm whitelisting NVDA & AMD against crypto related keywords. However I'll be making a 2nd rule that'll remove "how to mine" type questions w/ a message that contains links to sub reddits on mining.

morning briefing

Shares of Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) were hit after the close on Tuesday, all falling over 1%, as the DOJ followed Attorney General William Barr's interest in launching a broad antitrust investigation into Big Tech. Much of the rally on U.S. indices has been fueled by the FAANG stocks and a prolonged legal affair - as well as Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) growth worries - could erode some of that sentiment. Nasdaq futures are off by 0.7% on the news, ahead of today's quarterly report from Facebook, and Q2 results from Amazon and Alphabet on Thursday.
Brexit team
Boris Johnson will formally take office this afternoon, unveiling the names of his Cabinet and the team he has tasked with delivering Brexit. Investors are particularly interested to see who will be handed the top jobs such as chancellor of the exchequer, foreign secretary and Brexit minister. Johnson has pledged to negotiate a new Brexit agreemnt with the EU before Oct. 31, but if the bloc refuses, he has promised to leave without a deal on Halloween. IMF trims growth projection
The International Monetary Fund cut its global growth outlook yesterday to 3.2% in 2019 and 3.5% in 2020, both down 0.1 percentage points from its April projections. "Dynamism in the global economy is being weighed down by prolonged policy uncertainty as trade tensions remain heightened despite the recent U.S.-China trade truce, technology tensions have erupted threatening global technology supply chains, and the prospects of a no-deal Brexit have increased," the IMF said in a statement. Restructuring costs bite
Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB) is off 3.5% premarket after reporting a €3.15B loss in the second quarter, due to a large restructuring charge that wiped out what would have been a modest profit. "This decline is mainly due to our decision to exit substantially all of our equities sales and trading business," the bank said in a statement. Deutsche's shares have fallen more than 30% in the last 12 months, hit by a host of scandals relating to historical anti-money laundering failures. Car cuts
A big wave of layoffs is coming to Nissan Motor (OTCPK:NSANY) as the automaker plans 10,000 job cuts globally as part of efforts to turn around its business, Kyodo News reports. The number, which represents around 10% of its global workforce, is much larger than an earlier 4,800 estimate. The announcement will be revealed along with Nissan's Q2 results tomorrow and comes as the automaker struggles to restructure its management team following the arrest of former Chairman Carlos Ghosn.
More auto news
Due to legal risks for diesel-related issues and the cost of replacing Takata (OTCPK:TKTDQ) airbags, Germany's Daimler (OTCPK:DDAIF) said it would intensify cost cuts after reporting a €1.56B loss before interest and taxes in the second quarter. French peer PSA Group (OTCPK:PEUGF) still managed to turn a profit in that period despite a weaker outlook for car sales. Recurring operating income at the maker of Peugeot and Citroen cars rose 10.6% to €3.34B, lifting its operating margin to a new record of 8.7% in January-June. F-35 parts sourcing
Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) is working to establish alternate supply sources for F-35 parts in the U.S. after the Pentagon decided last week to remove Turkey from the fighter jet program. "We have a timeline that we're working towards... it's out through March of 2020 that we think it will all be resolved," CEO Marillyn Hewson said on a conference call. Turkey previously said it planned to buy a total of 100 aircraft over the years, but following President Trump's sanctions, Ankara will not be able to buy the jets.
KKR devours Arnott's
Just weeks after offloading its Kelsen snacks line to Nutella maker Ferrero, Campbell Soup (NYSE:CPB) is selling its Australian snacks unit Arnott's to KKR (NYSE:KKR), in a deal local media reported was worth $2.2B. Food M&A in Australia is getting hot. Last Friday, Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE:BUD) agreed to divest its Australian operations - with best-selling labels like VB and Carlton Draught - to Japan's Asahi (OTCPK:ASBRF) for $11B. Sunday and drone delivery
United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS) will start delivering packages on Sundays starting in January, following FedEx's (NYSE:FDX) announced move to seven-day delivery as the two work to meet the demands of online shopping. UPS also announced a new drone delivery subsidiary called UPS Flight Forward and said it has applied for FAA certifications needed to expand the business. Those would allow drone flights beyond an operator's visual line of sight, at night and without limit to the number of drones or operators in command. [uncensored-r/CryptoCurrency] I will tell you exactly what is going on here, this is critical information to understand if you ...

The following post by Suuperdad is being replicated because some comments within the post(but not the post itself) have been openly removed.
The original post can be found(in censored form) at this link:
np.reddit.com/ CryptoCurrency/comments/7vga1y
The original post's content was as follows:
The sellers see this undercutting and think that if these people want out, why am I buying in. The $8k guy pulls his offer, and so do the $7k, $6k and $5k guys. The highest offer is now $4k.
The sellers panic further, and the $14k guy undercuts the $10k guy and puts up a $9k sell.
Now the above example only happens if everyone simultaneously believe the same thing... this thing is shit. What happens in reality is there's no black and white, it's shades of gray. It's flow in vs flow out. But not MONEY, but rather OPINIONS.
So now what happens?
Time goes by and all holders opinions of their asset hasn't changed. They still think it's worth $11k and they got great deals scooping up these sellers selling.
WHO HAS THE POWER?
For example, if every sell order was removed and replaced at $1 million / BTC, and everyone refused to sell until this price (and no undercutting happened on the sell side), then buyers are just sitting there overcutting eachother, leapfrogging and closing the gap. So long as overall opinion remains strong, then it becomes up to the buyers to decide if they are willing to pay, how much they are willing to pay, etc.
The sellers are making their stand, and all the power is in the buyers hand, meet it or don't.
Eventually someone on one of the sides capitulates and a sale happens. Then people see this "new fair value" and they start setting up buy/sell orders in and around that price. Flow in and flow out are determined, for both:
1) How hard buyers are pushing through sell orders, and how hard sellers are pushing through buy orders (money in vs money out)
but ALSO, and often more importantly, especially on crashes
2) How frequent people are pulling unmet buy and sell orders off the table and replacing them with new ones to make more money, based on their OPINION on where this is going.
SO WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS?
A lot of new money has come in, and they don't really know what they are investing in. Sure a lot of new money has come in and done great research, are smart investors, and are buying solid tech. Most people, to be quite frank, they are buying Symbols and Names and trading on speculation.
These people came in because their OPINION has been heavily influenced in Nov, Dec, Jan, and they saw this money making machine. They were willing to pay huge, ride the wave up, keep buying, etc. They were "ground floor adopters" and were going to get rich.
They outnumber the old money by A LOT. Their OPINION MATTERS. It matters the most.
They are also a VAST MINORITY of "new money" that will enter the game in the next decade.
At this point, it was really too late to get in "early", and who would have wanted to anyways, it was all stil...

About DIMCOIN

Trade shares on blockchain for the first time – The cryptocurrency market has evolved extensively since its inception with the birth of Bitcoin. Bitcoin has inspired the creation of other cryptocurrencies, and the DIM (Data Interchange Module) is one such altcoin. It is available in two versions: DIMCOIN and DIM Currencies. The DIMCOIN is a speculative coin that can be exchanged against other cryptocurrencies, while the value of the respective DIM Currency is equivalent to the fiat currency that it is exchanged from. Furthermore, only the DIM Currencies can be used as a means of payment in the DIM Ecosystem. The DIM Ecosystem offers services such as cryptonisation (virtualisation) of equity, trading in cryptonised shares and assets, cryptocurrency exchanges, crypto-fiat currency exchanges, e-commerce, debit card purchases, business transactions, and commodity trading. All of these functions and services can be accessed through computers and hand-held devices.
The DIM and DIM Ecosystem are created and operated by the DIMCOIN Foundation, and are based on the NEM blockchain technology. NEM offers a unique two-tier design using node reputation, spam protection, and incentivised infrastructure through supernodes – all to ensure safe and secure online trading and transactions. The access tool to the DIM Ecosystem is the personal Depotwallet which will be distributed by the DIMCOIN Foundation. DIMCOIN.NEM.FUTURE.TOMORROW.TODAY

The digital currency market has been developed since the introduction of Bitcoin. It was the first time that blockchain “shares” were traded. Recently another currency was created:DIM (Data Interchange Module).
There are two versions of DIM: DIMCOIN and DIM Currency. DIMCOIN is a speculative coin that can be traded with other digital currencies.DIM Currency is a digital currency which is linked to a particular equivalent of fiat money. Furthermore only DIM Currency is valid as a means of payment in the realm of the DIM ecosystem.
The DIM ecosystem offers many services: digitisation of capital, trade with digital shares and property asset, digital exchange of currency, exchange of digital currency for fiat money, e-commerce, purchases with debit cards, commercial business and trade of commodities. All services are available for mobile and desktop. DIM and the DIM ecosystem are organised by the DIM Foundation and are based on on the NEM-blockchain-technology. This technology offers an unique two-sided interpretation with junction-reputation, spam-protection and time synchronisation by dint of so-called "super-junction" - to guarantee a safe online trade and safe online transaction.
The access to the DIM ecosystem is provided by a personal DEPOTWALLET also from the DIMCOIN Foundation. As meeting inside the DIM Ecosystem for DIM (DIMCOIN and DIM Currencies) is WISE Consulting. The Hybrid Stock Exchange (HYBSE) is an online platform for global companies and investors that offers a rash of digital property assets like shares, ETCs(Exchange-Traded Commodities), ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds), ETNs (Exchange-Traded Notes), Crypto-Forex Exchange, Index, Startups-IPO, Startup-ICO and Pirate Market.
Why Dimcoin? Here are the advantages: You can buy and sell stocks without a broker. By this you save on commissions and bank fees when buying and selling digital assets. Furthermore you will get total control over your property. You hold your own property and can resist against garnishment. Only you can access your assets and no third party is involved.. Your "buy" and "sell" orders get executed in real-time on the blockchain. It’s a decentralised network that is always accessible 24/7 ). Service is included.
The exemplary board of directors and advisors provide their vast knowledge of finance, policy and regulation to managing and advising DIMCOIN. The experienced team lend their understanding and ability in technology, financial services and compliance to developing and maintaining DIMCOIN. The investors include globally recognised venture capital firms and strategic investors.
After investing with some of the most common cryptocurrencies you will receive an email within 10 days with instructions on how to receive your DIMCOIN / DIM TOKEN. You will need to download NEMs NanoWallet or DIMCOINs Depotwallet. Depotwallet is a blockchain wallet that permits users to buy, sell, manage and hold DIM cryptocurrencies and cryptonised assets. The wallet is free to download on the DIMCOIN, HYBSE and Depotwallet websites.
The DIM Foundation is responsible for the management, creation and distribution of both the DIMCOIN and DIM Currencies. The price of DIMCOIN is determined by market forces and also influenced by developments within the DIM ecosystem. You can trade and convert DIMCOIN to DIM Currencies, then you will be able to buy cryptonised assets in the DIM ecosystem. Through Depotwallet debit cards users can perform online and walk-in merchant shopping. Anyone with a Depotwallet account can send and accept DIMCOIN. You can find all the crypto-equities on HYBSE.com, and you can purchase them through the Depotwallet (currently in beta phase).
How To Register a Depotwallet:
Visit: https://depotwallet.com/ Open Account Wallet name and Password and Create an account Save the “.wlt” file in a secure location Open text document Copy and paste the raw wallet file and private keys on a text document Check the boxes andagree!
Difference between DIMCOIN and DIM TOKEN: The DIM TOKEN is something that is only available during the Pre-ICO and ICO period. Buying 50+ DIM TOKEN qualifies the user to receive a share of total 30% of the net transfer fees from the DIM Ecosystem. DIMCOIN is a speculative coin which is used for investing and within the DIM Ecosystem.
How do you invest?
You need to have a cryptocurrency wallet in order to purchase DIMCOIN, and you need to create a Depotwallet / NanoWallet in order to receive DIMCOIN. You can invest from the DIMCOIN website by following the instructions provided there. Invest with XEM and receive an additional 10% Bonus (depending on the time of your investment - check the website to get the last rate).
Why should you invest?
The current global stock markets are electronic in nature. In general, all electronic matching systems are quicker than the open outcry system of the past. However, it is still not quick enough for our ever-changing world. After orders are matched, it can take days for them to be executed. It is burdensome and expensive to buy assets such as shares from foreign markets using traditional methods such as banks and stock markets. Transferring shares between issuers and investors using current banking systems is archaic and lethargic at best. It can take from two days to six months before both parties are in possession of their assets.
What does this token represent?
1 DIM Token will be equivalent to 100 DIMCOIN, each DIMCOIN is worth $0.01. The tokens represent a form of ownership of the DIM Ecosystem. Payout structure: Investors with +50 DIM Tokens will receive a share from 30% of the net fees earned on the DIM cryptocurrency transfers within the DIM ecosystem according to the percentage of tokens owned. Bonuses: Grid is constructed with regards to amount raised.
Be clever - invest in DIM and use cryptocurrency! The DIM is a digital cryptocurrency which comes in two versions, the DIMCOIN and DIM Currencies. DIM Currencies are a digital currency for the DIM-ecosystem e-commerce and merchant purchasing.
ICO started – the way to success:
This year DIMCOIN will enlist in 3 major exchanges, reprogram HYBSE into a blockchain platform and launch an application on Android. Have 50 companies listed on HYBSE.
In 2018 is the implementation of HYBSE on blockchain, launch mobile phone trading for Android and have DIM Currencies accepted for commercial purposes. Expand operations into Asia.
2019: Have 1% share of the global trading done on DIM ecosystem, list ecosystem on global stock markets and implement DIM ATMs. Expand operations to South America.
2020: List the DIM ecosystem on global stock markets. Expand operations into Africa.
DIMCOINS - the best kind of digital currency!

Daily Performances
General Comment: Calm before the storm? The broad market continues to drift sideways in thin volumes, and with trading ranges narrowing by the day. Volatility has all but disappeared, but most likely only for the short term. Technicals indicate that a breakout is likely within the next several weeks, probably triggered by external factors ensued by a big gap move as participants try to capture the movement in a vacuum.

Daily Performances
General Comment: The market continues to trade sideways in thin volumes, with BTC trading right around the 20DMA level. Technicals show a narrowing uppelower band (BTC USD7'000/9'000) that indicates a breakout in the near future, and when it does the the low volume/low volatility environment could change drastically at least for a short while.

Technical Analysis - BTC
BTCUSD is locked in the 7'700-7'000 range, if it manages to break above 7'700 we would expect to test 8600, if it breaks 7'000 we expect an important fall to below 6'000

Magic Number? Chart Data Hints at June 6 Bitcoin BoostA major reprieve just may be in the offing for the battered bitcoin bulls in the next 36 hours – if, that is, historical patterns repeat themselves.
Daily Performances
General Comment: We continue to see sideways movement with no strong directional conviction. However, a prolonged period of very low volumes and dangerously low volatility juxtaposed with the narrowing of critical technical levels - BTC USD7'000 psychological support that must not be broken, and USD8'000 level broken above that may pull in buyers to test the upside band of USD9'000 - indicates a potential violent break out of recent range over the next several weeks. The BTC market has been flirting with both sides. Keeping a very close check on potential news triggers (Crypto and non-Crypto) would be highly advisable.

Crypto Exchange Coinbase Plans Expansion With Japanese OfficeCoinbase Inc., one of the largest U.S. digital-currency exchanges, is expanding into one of the world’s hottest crypto markets.
Daily Performances
General Comment: The broad crypto market drifted sideways to slightly softer overnight. Market cap is at USD330 billion. We continue to see more of the same - low volumes, extremely low volatility and high correlation across currencies. Yesterday we failed to reach short term upside targets for confirmation of longer term consolidation (BTC USD 8000, ETH 650). On the news front, lots of news coming out from the crypto exchange business in Japan with regards to both new entrants (HitBTC, Coinbase) The move reflects the overall trend to be compliant with local regulation, which is healthy for the long term.

Daily Performances
General Comment: Over the weekend the broad market recovered steadily but in quiet trading. What appears to have been an ETH led sell off last week has reversed nicely (as can clearly be seen in ETH/BTC back to 0.08), with BTC holding the critical USD7000 level and now testing the “all clear” point of USD 8'000. The equivalent ETH level to the upside is around USD 650, both of which broken above indicate a possible test of higher ranges. XRP appears to have fully recovered this level.Developments in “off-chain” markets and mounting concerns of European sovereign debt continue to be the next possible catalyst for crypto markets.
