XOM dropped from the DOw

For Trading August 25th
XOM, PFE, & RTX DROPPED FROM DJIA
More New Highs for NAZ & S&P-500
TSLA TOPS $2,100!!
Today’s market was higher from the start and leveled off around +240 -250 until the last 45 minutes when it powered higher into the close finishing +378.13 (1.35%), NASDAQ +67.92 (.60%), S&P 500 34.12 (1%), The Russell +15.90 (1.03%), and the big winner the DJ Transports +208.17 (1.9%). Internals were positive at 2.5:1 NYSE and 1.4:1 on the NAZ with NYSE volume 5:1 UP ! The DJIA was 5:1 higher and this will be the last time that AAPL will affect the average at the rates of the past since it is price-weighted and AAPL will no be a $100 stock, not $500. The only big loser today was UNH falling $36 DP’s and the gainers BA +74, AAPL +41, and GS +33 DP’s.
Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows me to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. It is informative and allows me to share insights as the market is open and moving. The link is: https://discord.gg/ATvC7YZ and I will be there and active from before the open and all day. It’s a great place to share ideas and gain some insights, and we’ve grown to almost 3000 members. I also did this video over the weekend on a day-trade, (actually 2) that I made in AAPL on Friday. I think it’s highly informative as a guide to under what conditions these kind of trades in expiring options make sense. The link is https://youtu.be/qIV0G-hP3aM Enjoy!!
Tonight’s closing comment video: https://youtu.be/eMCD4wjOVh4
SECTORS: While it isn’t necessarily my focus, it’s difficult to not key in on TESLA breaking $2,100 today, trading $2129 and then selling off to $1927 before turning back up to close $2014 -35.78 (1.75%). A week ago, someone in the Discord room asked what I thought, and I gave them an opinion that once we closed over $1,643 that we were headed directly to $2,000-2,100 on a straight shot. I really had a high degree of certainty but thought it would take more than 7 trading days to get to that range! The “possible” vaccine news this morning lit a fire under the airlines; AAL +1.28 (10.5%), DAL +2.53 (9.28%), LUV +2.22 (6.4%), and UAL +3.28 (9.9%). Next were the cruise lines with CCL +1.49 (10%), RCL +2.90 (4.7%), and NCHL +1.18 (7.6%). Personally, I don’t see these names holding up with DAL announcing that unless they get further financial assistance that they will have to fire an additional 1941 pilots. These guys just want us to foot the bill for their disgraceful actions when they could have been preparing for a downturn rather than just lined their own pockets and bought back stock. PaloAlto Networks beat both top and bottom lines but gave soft guidance on next quarters revenues and after closing $267.07 -2.26 it fell further to $254.68 -12.77 (4.7%). The big news on the DJIA is that Dow Jones is making 3 major changes. I could be wrong, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen more than one at a time, but here are the names: Salesforce (CRM) replaces XOM, Amgen (AMGN) replaces Pfizer (PFE), and Honeywell (HON) replaces Raytheon (RTX) which also includes UTX.
FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN was HIGHER with TSN +.67, BGS +.44, FLO +.23, CPB +.15, CAG +.44, MDLZ +.51, KHC +.67, CALM -.63, JJSF +3.45, SAFM +.01, HRL -.05, SJM +1.15, PPC +.38, KR +.15, and PBJ $34.31 +.15 (.44%).

FAANG and Big Cap: were HIGHER with GOOGL +10.13, AMZN +22.78, AAPL +8.62, FB +4.69, NFLX -3.51, NVDA +1.91, TSLA -49.96, BABA +11.20, BIDU +.74, CMG -9.84, BA +11.00, CAT +3.45, DIS +3.26, and XLK $118.96 +1.02 (.86%). PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THESE PRICES ARE LATE MARKET QUOTES AND DO NOT REPRESENT THE 4:00 CLOSES.
FINANCIALS were HIGHER with GS +5.22, JPM +2.93, BAC +.76, MS +1.31, C +1.84, PNC +3.51, AIG +1.25, TRV +3.07, AXP +3.83, V +2.47, and XLF $24.89 +.58 (2.39%).
OIL, $42.62 +.28. Oil was higher in today’s trading before we rose further in the afternoon closing up at the top end of the day’s range. The stocks were HIGHER across the board with XLE $37.02 +.99 (2.75%).
GOLD $1,939.20 -7.80, rose early in the session trading up thru the double tops at $1,963.10 to $1,970 before selling off and finishing near the lows. I am still a bull on the metal, and we have a September bull call spread on using NEM 65/70 calls with a cost of $1.45, which closed today @ $1.66.
BITCOIN: closed $11,770 +75. After breaking out over $10,000 we have had a “running correction” pushing prices toward $12,000, reaching a recovery high of $12220 Thursday, and after a day of rest in between, we resumed the rally touching $12,635. We had 750 shares of GBTC and sold off 250 last week at $13.93 and still have 500 with a cost of $8.45. GBTC closed $13.72 + .14 today.
Tomorrow is another day.

For Trading April 14th
Stocks Decline, Finally
Oil Fails Again on Cutbacks
Today was a down day from the beginning and I’m trying to get this done by starting early since we’ve already lost power once from the storms that decimated the southeast yesterday. To begin, the DJIA was weak from the start and a downgrade on CAT by Bank America. That sent the Dow lower than the other indexes and currently we are down just under 2% while NASDAQ is the strength with AZMN, TSLA, and NFLX the leaders, and S&P 500 following the DJIA but only 1.4%. Well, the power came back on and I’ll do this as fast as possible because the storm is going to last a few hours. DJIA -328.60 (1.39%, NASDAQ +38.84 (.48%), S&P 500 -28.19 (1.01%), the big loser was the Russell -34.68 (2.78%) and the DJ Transports -201.34 (2.44%). The big loser was CAT leading the DJIA -71 DPs and no triple-digits and the totals with 21 down and 9 higher, led by AAPL +36 DPs. The big gainers were the FAANG, listed below in Sectors. Market internals were in line with the loss with A/D 3:1 on NYSE and 3:2 on NASDAQ. Volume was light again and consumer discretionary strong and real estate and financials weak.
It’s a great place to share ideas and gain some insights, and we’ve grown to almost 1800 members. I also did this video titled “How to survive being an options trader and not blow up your account,” over the long weekend. I think it’s very informative as a guide to stock selection and option choices. The link is https://youtu.be/Y7H9RpWfLlo Enjoy!!
SECTORS: On the “I have no idea this was going on” group there were 2 big winners today. One I mentioned earlier was Independence Contract Drilling (ICD) on Thursday finished $6.25 +3.85 (160%), finished today $12.93 +6.68 (106%) on essentially no news except the “trade halted, trade resumed.”
But the HOMERUN OF THE DAY was SCWorx (WORX) on the news that it got a 48 million COVID-19 Rapid Testing units over the next 24 weeks. I mentioned it in our Discord room this morning when it had a high of $9.95 and was trading around $6.25, but that was just the beginning. By the end of the day it had traded $14.88 and finished the day $12.02 +9.77 (434.22%). Not bad, definitely a HR.
BIOPHARMA: was HIGHER with BIIB +1.89, ABBV +.85, REGN +4.06, ISRG -9.26, MYL -.02, TEVA +.19, VRTX +5.67, BHC -.17, INCY +1.20, ICPT +.09, LABU +.02 and IBB $114.49 +.52 (.46%).
CANNABIS: This group was MIXED with TLRY -.28, CGC +.01, CRON -.01, GWPH +1.22, ACB -.10, PYX +.03, NBEV -.15, CURLF -.15, KERN +.73 (10.8%), and MJ $11.45 unchanged.
DEFENSE: was LOWER with LMT -1.06, RTX -2.71, GD -3.11, TXT -1.14, NOC +2.20, BWXT -.93, TDY -8.82, and ITA $150.63 -4.86 (3.13%).
RETAIL: was LOWER with M -.52, JWN -.96, KSS -1.11, DDS -2.25, JCP -.02, WMT +3.44, TGT +1.12, TJX -.81, RL -4.46 (5.55%), UAA -.58 (5.56%), LULU -4.24, TPR -.90, CPRI -.24 and XRT $33.28 -.27 (.80%).
FAANG and Big Cap: were HIGHER with several big moves vs. the overall market, with GOOGL +3.84, AMZN +132.24 (6.47%), AAPL +5.26, FB -.12, NFLX +28.36 (7.65%), NVDA +7.41, TSLA +96.02 (16.76%), BABA =3.07, BIDU -.30, BA -3.72, CAT biggest loser in the Dow -10.58 (8.46%), DIS -1.18, and XLK $85.50 +.30 (.35%).
FINANCIALS were LOWER with GS -4.76, JPM -4.16, BAC -.84, MS -1.49, C -.56, PNC -4.23, AIG -.82, TRV -3.32, AXP -4.03 and XLF $22.49 -.89 (3.81%).
OIL, $22.41 -.35. Oil started last night with a 5-minute bar that started with the open @ 24.74 +2.00 and within that first 5-minutes made the high $24.74 and made the low of the day $22.03. The move at the open was influenced by the supposed deal to cut production, but quickly fell away. After an attempt at 24.57 failed we worked lower and a final try in the afternoon at$24.00 it fell back to finish down on the day. Stocks were mixed to lower with the XLE $38.88 -.03 (.09%).
METALS, GOLD: $1,761.40 + 8.60. After the recent gains, Gold broke solidly above $1,700 and traded as high as $1772 today. Today was a major move to the upside and the close is the highest since September 2012 and sets up a move towards the highs at $1,800 from 2011.
BITCOIN: closed $6810 -480. After we traded in the uptrend, I mentioned this weekend that I felt we’d have to test 67.50 and today we hit 6550 before turning back up. While I want to add the 350 sold just over a week ago, I want to wait and see some stabilization. We still own 400 GBTC with an average of $8.06. GBTC closed $7.27 -.53 today.
Tomorrow is another day.

Join Us Every Day, Link Below
Today’s market started off slowly and had a slow, steady climb to +81 by 11:30 followed by a quiet back and forth to make the intraday low of +36 by about 3:30 and a fast buying spree that took us to the new high of day and a close of +105.94 (.37%), NASDAQ +69.51 (.78%), S&P 500 +16.53 (.51%), the Russell -.34 (.02%), and the DJ Transports +35.05 (.32%). Market internals were positive with NYSE A/D 1.7:1 and NAZ 1.2:1. For the DOW we were 23 UP, 6 down and PG unchanged. There were only 3 double-digit moves with AAPL +38 DPs and V +10 while BA -21DPs.
Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows me to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. SECTORS: Other names in the news: We started with the story that QGEN was failed to find any acceptable offers after their strategic review and search for an appropriate suitor. The stock had declined from $41 last summer and then fell from $32 to $25 in October when it lowered guidance. The news that they were “reviewing options” took the stock back to a new high of $43.16 last month, but the current news dropped the stock to $30.23 before closing $32.91 -8.56 (20.64%).
RiteAid (RAD), also a major turnaround to actual earning that was reversed 1:20 in April had already worked its way from $5.02 in August to close last Wednesday $8.32, and blasted higher to close $11.84 +3.52 (42.31%). It continued higher again every day since and today finished $19.19 +3.05 (19.8%) and traded as high as $21.30 in extended hours. Besides the earnings last week, the stock was recommended by Zack’s this morning, but I think more important is the fact that there is a 26.6% short interest in the stock.
Amazon’s numbers were exceptional, and the company said it added 5 million new Prime customers, either with free trials and paid subscriptions. The numbers were topline only but the stock had an EXCEPTIONAL day +90.89 (5.08%).
One of last week’s winners, MBOT, which ran up from $5.00 to $20 on an FDA approval of a robotic device did what many small firms do when their stock takes off, they issue more shares. MBOT did a “direct offering at the market, and the stock took it on the chin, gapping down from $16.28 to $13.35 and finished the day $14.00 -2.28 (14%).
And, the Disaster Du Jour was Spectrum Pharma (SPPI), whose lung cancer trial didn’t make its expected endpoint. The stock has spent most of the year between $7.00 and $12, closed $7.75 Tuesday gapped down on the news and closed $3.50 -5.25 (60%).
BIOPHARMA: was LOWER with BIIB -2.28, ABBV +.05, REGN -1.65, ISRG-.78, MTL -.27, TEVA +.08, VRTX -.31, BHC -.04, INCY -2.64, ICPT -.83, LABU -2.10 and IBB $122.58 -.92 (.74%).
CANNABIS: stocks were LOWER with only 2 names higher; KERN, the compliance software stock +.97 (12.31%) and PYX +.39 (6.17%). MJ was $16.73 -.41 (2.39%). This may be a good group for January trades after tax-selling.
DEFENSE: was HIGHER with LMT +2.70, RTN +1.67, GD -.57, TXT +.01, UTX +1.14, NOC +.88, BWXT -.16, TDY +.85, and ITA $224.90 -.20 (.09%).
RETAIL was HIGHER with the stores, discounters and the brands all up. To me, this spells trouble coming since it would seem to me to be the big stores discounting and crushing their own margins, only to suffer again when they report earnings (or lack thereof). The XRT was $46.05 +.33 (.72%).
FAANG and Big Cap: were MIXED with GOOGL +19.57, AMZN (see above), AAPL +6.55 (2.3%), FB +3.07, NFLX -.55, NVDA +.88, TSLA +6.25, BABA +2.66, BIDU -.72, BOX +.01, IBM +.02, BA -2.75, CAT +.97, XLK $91.92 +.68 (.75%).
FINANCIALS were HIGHER with GS +1.61, JPM +1.52, BAC +.33, MS +.42, C +1.34, PNC + .73, AIG -.32, TRV +.46, AXP +.71 and XLF $30.85 +.17 (.55%).
OIL, $61.68 + .57. Today’s action was mostly another solid up day, with a nice upward bias. The stocks were HIGHER and XLE was $61.94 -.02 (.03%).
METALS, GOLD: $1,514.40 + 9.60 after breaking out “of the box” earlier in the week, and has moved higher, and is now approaching the resistance around the $1,520 to $1,525 range.
BITCOIN: closed $7250 + 15. We broke to the upside but ran into a brick wall just under $8,000. I was very disappointed to see the break, although we are right back to the lower Bollinger Band. After having a GTC order @ $9.85 since we sold on 11/5, we finally got filled on the first 350 shares. I added 400 GBTC at $8.06 bringing the average down to $8.99. GBTC closed $8.80 -.05 today.
Tomorrow is another day.

“DEAL or NO DEAL” Market Believes, I Don’t
BA To Stop Production On 737MAX
An Original “Nifty Fifty” Comes Back Into the Headlines – IFF -
Join Us Every Day, Link Below
Today’s market was rallied by the continuing excitement about our “deal” with China, even though none of the details of what we’re getting for giving up the 12/15 tariffs, cutting back on some of the other tariff, and frankly, who know what else. This president has shown himself to have a very loose relationship with the truth, so I’m on the “wait and see the details” team. The news that BA was either going to cut production or stop entirely on the MAX kept the stock from participating in the initial rally. It was a major drain early on opening $329 -12.67 and then hitting 326.43 before a rally that took it to $336 before another fade. This did not have enough effect to keep the major indices from roaring ahead to new all-time highs. By the close BA had fallen all the way back to close $327 but after the close the news hit that it was a halt to production and after hitting $321 it is $323.99. This weighed on the DJIA again and it finished +100.51 (.30%) while NASDAQ was +79.35 (.91%), S&P 500 +22.65 (.71%), the Russell +11.96 (.73%) and the DJ Trans +91.56 (.85%). NYSE A/D was 2.4:1 while NAZ was 5:3 and the DJIA was 23:7 with BA taking 100 off the Dow and UNH +44 and AAPL +32DPs.
Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows me to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. SECTORS: Other names in the news: We started with the news that one of the original “Nifty Fifty” go-go stocks from the 1960’s is going to merge with the nutrition unit of another oldie, DD. IFF, formerly International Flavors and Fragrances, will be the surviving named company. DD was looking for a strategic partner and its shareholders will retain 55.4% while IFF will own 44.6%. IFF was 120.00 -13.98 (10.43%) while DD finished 64.89 +.09. The deal is worth $26.2 Billion. Asxome Therapeutics (AXSM) reported that axs-05, its drug for major depressive disorder demonstrated “rapid onset of action with statistically significant improvement in its Phase 3 trials. The stock, which has appeared in this space several times in the last year started January 2019 at $2.63 and moved to over $9 in the first weeks and had a steady move to $30.50 by late September before a decline back to $13.63. Since then it had moved back to consolidate just below its old high around $30 until it broke out again in late November. It closed Friday $46.79 before the news and opened at $85.01 + 38.28 and after trading $88 finished $79.80 +33.01 (70.55%).
The big loser on my radar was Pacific Gas & Electric (PCG) the biggest utility in California. The governor came out against a plan for capping the company liability for the fires with a settlement of $13.5 Billion. Since the liability issues surfaced in late 2017, the stock had dropped to the mid-30’s, and then after the fires of last season fell further to $5.07 in 1/19, rallied to $25.19 this summer and then back to $3.55 last month. The settlement had pushed the stock back to $13 on Friday but opened $8.86 today. After a rally back to $10.97 it closed $9.67 -1.57 (14%) and this is not over by a long shot. Another drug trial that failed was by Wave Life Sciences (WVE) who announced prior to the open that its drug, Suvodirsen, for Duchenne Muscular Dystropy showed no change in the baseline and is discontinued. The stock, which spent most of 2018 between $32 and $55 had fallen from its 2019 high of $48 to trade $17.63 and had rallied to trade $39.98 on Friday, opened $17.96 and finish $16.79 -20.81 (55.35%).
BIOPHARMA: was HIGHER with BIIB + 4.57, ABBV 1.61, REGN -.41, ISRG +12.35, MTL -.11, TEVA +.24, VRTX +.52, BHC -.75, INCY +1.15, ICPT +4.05, LABU +2.13 and IBB $121.70 +1.13 (.94%).

FAANG and Big Cap: were HIGHER with GOOGL +13.83, AMZN +8.06, AAPL +5.10, FB +3.62, NFLX +5.12, NVDA +1.25, TSLA +19.67 (5.49%), BABA +1.69, BIDU +3.96, BOX +.22, IBM -.08, BA -16.47 (SEE ABOVE), CAT -.17, and XLK $90.29 +.80 (.89%).
FINANCIALS were HIGHER with GS +3.02, JPM +.63, BAC +.75, MS +.27, C +.41, PNC +.36, AIG unch., TRV +.52, AXP -1.03 and XLF $30.82 +.11 (.36%).
OIL, $60.21 + .14. Today’s action was mostly just a quiet day for Oil and the other energy markets. We continue to rally up to the area of resistance just around the $60.00 level. This is the closing area from the Saudi bombing spike to the upside. I’m just not sure what it will take to get us through $60 on a closing basis but if I had to have a position I would be a seller. Nat Gas had a strong showing but it only closed the gap to the downside from Monday, so I need to see a bit more work. I’m still interested in getting long UNG, but I’d like to see a bit of stability first, or at least a test of $2.28 or so. The stocks were strong and XLE was $61.12 + .81 (1.34%).
METALS, GOLD: $1,480.50 - .70. Last night I said, I think we can see another test of $1,490 -$1,500 again. We rallied right up to $1,491.60 before the bonds started to fall back and interest rates climbed back to recent highs. It seems that Gold has been trading on China news, but especially on rates. When rates decline, the non-interest bearing nature is not so important, but as rates moved by over 10 bps, gold sold off by almost $20. Current range is between 1450 -1490, and if we can get back to $1460-65 and hold, I’d take on another long position.
BITCOIN: closed $6,860 -405. We broke to the upside but ran into a brick wall just under $8,000. I was very disappointed in today’s action, although we are right back to the lower Bollinger Band. After having a GTC order @ $9.85 since we sold on 11/5, we finally got filled on the first 350 shares. I will add another 400 either higher or lower. GBTC closed $8.28 -.51 today. If we hold the bottoms I will add tomorrow.
Tomorrow is another day.

"A Sea Of Red": Global Stocks Plunge With Tech Shares In Freefall

While there was some nuance in yesterday's pre-open trading, with Asia at least putting up a valiant defense to what would soon become another US rout, this morning the market theme is far simpler: a global sea of red.

Stocks fell across the globe as worries over softening demand for the iPhone prompted a tech stock selloff across the world, while the arrest of car boss Carlos Ghosn pulled Nissan and Renault sharply lower. Even China's recent rally fizzled and the Shanghai composite closed down 2.1% near session lows, signalling that the global slump led by tech shares would deepen Tuesday, adding a new layer of pessimism to markets already anxious over trade. Treasuries advanced and the dollar edged higher.
S&P 500 futures traded near session lows, down 0.6% and tracking a fall in European and Asian shares after renewed weakness in the tech sector pushed Nasdaq futures sharply lower for a second day after Monday's 3% plunge and crippled any hopes for dip buying. News around Apple triggered the latest bout of stock market selling, after the Wall Street Journal reported the consumer tech giant is cutting production for its new iPhones.
Europe's Stoxx 600 Index dropped a fifth day as its technology sector fell 1.3% to the lowest level since February 2017, taking the decline from mid-June peak to 21% and entering a bear market. Not surprisingly, the tech sector was the worst performer on the European benchmark on Tuesday, following Apple’s decline to near bear-market territory and U.S. tech stocks plunge during recent sell-off. The selloff was compounded by an auto sector drop led by Nissan and Renault after Ghosn, chairman of both carmakers, was arrested in Japan for alleged financial misconduct. The European auto sector was not far behind, dropping 1.6 percent, and the broad European STOXX 600 index was down 0.9 percent to a four-week low.
“Most of Europe had a red session yesterday and that has been compounded by the news on Apple and tech stocks overnight, The overall climate is risk off,” said Investec economist Philip Shaw. “Beyond stocks, the Italian bonds spread (over German bonds) is at its widest in about a month now, and Brexit continues to rumble on - uncertainty is very much hurting risk sentiment,” he added.
Earlier, MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dropped 1.2 percent, with Samsung Electronics falling 2 percent. In Japan, Sony Corp shed 3.1 percent. Japan’s Nikkei slipped 1.1 percent, with shares of Nissan Motor Co tumbling more than 5% after Ghosn’s arrest and on news he will be fired from the board this week.
Meanwhile, as noted yesterday, the CDS index of US investment grade issuers blew out to the widest level since the Trump election, signaling renewed nerves about the asset class.

Exactly two months after the S&P hit all time highs, stocks have been caught in a vicious decline and continue to struggle for support as some of the technology companies that helped drive the S&P 500 to a record high earlier this year tumbled amid a slowdown in consumer sales and fears over regulation, many of them entering a bear market.
At the same time, a more gloomy macro outlook is emerging, with Goldman chief equity strategist David kostin overnight recommending investors hold more cash even as it reiterated its base case of S&P 3000 in 2019.

Ray Dalio disagreed, and said that investors should expect low returns for a long time after enjoying years of low interest rates from central-bank stimulus.
“The easy days of long, global bull markets where you can invest in a tracker for five basis points -- I say this as an active fund manager -- and watch the thing go up, I think those days are gone,” Gerry Grimstone, chairman of Barclays Bank PLC and Standard Life Aberdeen PLC, said in an interview on Bloomberg Television. “It’s going to be a move back to value investing, and back to the Warren Buffett-style of investment.”
In the latest Brexit news, UK PM May is reportedly drawing up secret plans to drop the Irish border backstop and win support from angry Brexiteers, while reports added PM May has received agreement from the EU to drop the backstop plan if both sides can agree on alternative arrangements to keep the border open. Meanwhile, Brexiteers reportedly still lack the sufficient number of signatures required to trigger a no-confidence vote against UK PM May, the FT reported. In related news, Brexit rebels reportedly admitted attempts to oust PM May has stalled as Eurosceptic MPs turned on each other. The Telegraph also reported that the confidence vote now appears to be on hold until after Parliament votes in December on Mrs May's Brexit deal.
Sky News reported that the UK government are to publish new analysis before the MPs’ meaningful vote on the Withdrawal Agreement comparing the “costs and benefits” of Brexit. The impact of three scenarios will be measured; no Brexit, no deal, and leaving with the government's draft deal and a free trade agreement.
In rates, Treasuries rose, driving the 10-year yield down to its lowest level since late September, ahead of Thanksgiving Thursday. Italian government bond yields jumped to one-month high on Tuesday and Italian banking stocks dropped to a two-year low, hurt by risk aversion and concerns over the Italian budget. Euro zone money markets no longer fully price in even a 10 bps rate rise from the European Central Bank in 2019, indicating growing investor concern about the economic outlook in the currency bloc.
In FX, the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index whipsawed in early London trading even as it stayed near a more than one-week low on concern cooling global growth will slow the pace of Fed rate hikes, keeping Treasury yields under pressure. At the same time, the pound stabilized as Theresa May appealed to business leaders to help deliver her Brexit deal, and evidence mounted that a plot to oust her as U.K. Prime Minister is faltering.
The euro slid as Italian bonds dropped, pushing the yield spread to Germany to the widest in a month; the currency had opened the London session higher, supported by corporate buying in EUGBP. The yen rallied to a month-to-date high as Asian stocks followed a U.S. equity slide while the New Zealand dollar got a boost from a jump in milk production; the Aussie was on the back foot even after the RBA said Australia’s unemployment rate could fall further in the near term. India’s rupee rallied a sixth day after the central bank signaled a compromise with the government in their dispute over reserves.
Bitcoin extended its drop below $4,500 for the first time since October 2017.
WTI crude oil futures hovered around $57 a barrel after oil prices lost steam as fears about slower global demand and a surge in U.S. production outweighed expected supply cuts by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Brent crude slipped 0.9 percent to $66.21 per barrel.
In other overnight news, BoJ Governor Kuroda said there is currently no need to ease further, while he added that there was a need for bold monetary policy in 2013 and now we need to persistently continue with policy. Furthermore, Kuroda suggested that the chance of reaching the 2% inflation target during FY2020 is low. Japanese PM Abe says the next initial budget is to have measures to address sales tax.
India's Finance Ministry sources expect that the RBI will stand pat on rates at its meeting next month.
RBA Governor Lowe states that steady policy is to be maintained for 'a while yet' and it is likely that rates will increase at some point if the economy progresses as expected.
Expected data include housing starts and building permits. Best Buy, Campbell Soup, Lowe’s, Medtronic, Target, TJX, and Gap are among companies reporting earnings.
Market Snapshot
Top Overnight News
Asian stock markets were lower across the board as the risk averse tone rolled over from Wall St, where the tech sector led the sell-off as Apple shares dropped nearly 4% on reports it had reduced production orders and with all FAANG stocks now in bear market territory. As such, the tech sector underperformed in the ASX 200 (-0.4%) and Nikkei 225 (-1.1%) was also pressured with Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan among the worst hit after their Chairman Ghosn was arrested on financial misconduct allegations. Shanghai Comp. (-2.1%) and Hang Seng (-2.0%) were heavily pressured after the PBoC continued to snub liquidity operations and as China’s blue-chip tech names conformed to the global rout in the sector, while JD.com earnings added to the glum as China’s 2nd largest e-commerce firm posted its weakest revenue growth since turning public. Finally, 10yr JGBs were weaker amid profit taking after futures recently hit their highest in around a year and following mixed results at today’s 20yr auction.

Major European indices are largely in the red, with the SMI outperforming (+0.1%) which is being bolstered by Novartis (+1.0%) following their announcement of a joint digital treatment with Pear Therapeutics for substance abuse disorder. The DAX (-0.7%) is lagging its peers, weighed on by Wirecard (-5.0%) following a disappointing change to guidance forecasting as well as weak sentiment across IT names after the FAANG stocks entered bear market territory on Wall St. In particular, the Stoxx 600 Technology sector (-1.9%), dropped to its lowest level since Feb 2017. Meanwhile, Deutsche Bank (-2.5%) are in the red due to reports that the Co processed payments for Danske Bank in Estonia.
Top European News
In FX, the DXY index remains technically prone to further downside pressure having closed below another Fib support level yesterday and testing the next bearish chart area around 96.050-10 ahead of 96.000 even. However, a more concerted bout of risk-off trade/positioning saved the DXY and broad Dollar from steeper declines as the tech-induced sell-off in stocks intensified, and jitters over Brexit alongside the Italian budget returned to the fore.
NZD/AUD - The Kiwi is bucking the overall trend and outperforming in contrast to this time on Monday, with Nzd/Usd rebounding firmly to 0.6850+ levels and Aud/Nzd retreating through 1.0650 to just south of 1.0600 following overnight data showing a hefty 6.5% y/y rise in NZ milk collections for October. Conversely, the Aud/Usd has slipped back under 0.7300 again, and close to 0.7250 in wake of RBA minutes underscoring no rush to hike rates and subsequent affirmation of wait-and-see guidance from Governor Lowe. In fact, he asserts that the jobless rate could decline to 4.5% vs 5% at present without inducing wage inflation, while also underlining concerns about the supply of credit.
JPY/CHF - Both benefiting from their more intrinsic allure during periods of pronounced risk aversion and investor angst, as Usd/Jpy probes a bit deeper below 112.50 and a key Fib at 112.46 that could be pivotal on a closing basis with potential to expose daily chart support circa 112.16 ahead of 112.00. Meanwhile, the Franc has inched closer to 0.9900 and over 1.1350 vs the Eur that remains burdened with the aforementioned Italian fiscal concerns.
GBP/EUR - Almost a case of déjà vu for Sterling and the single currency as early attempts to the upside vs the Greenback saw Cable and EuUsd revisit recent peaks around 1.2880 and 1.1470 respectively, but a combination of chart resistance and bearish fundamentals forced both back down to circa 1.2825 and 1.1425. In terms of precise technical/psychological levels, 1.2897 and 1.1445 represent Fib retracements, ahead of 1.2900 and 1.1500, while the Pound has remained relatively unchanged and unresponsive to largely on the fence pending Brexit rhetoric from the BoE in testimony to the TSC on November’s QIR.
In commodities, gold has stayed within a USD 5/oz range and traded relatively flat throughout the session moving with the steady dollar ahead of US Thanksgiving. Similarly, copper traded lacklustre breaking a 5-day rally because of a subdued risk sentiment stemming from ongoing US-China trade tensions; with Shanghai rebar adversely affected from these factors. Brent (-0.1%) and WTI (+0.2%) are following a relatively quiet overnight session, while recent upticks in the complex resulted in WTI reclaiming the USD 57/bbl and Brent edging closer to USD 67/bbl. This follows comments from IEA Chief Birol that Iranian oil exports declined by almost 1mln BPD from summer peaks. Looking ahead, traders will be keeping the weekly API crude inventory data which is expected to print a build of 8.79mln barrels.
On today's light data calendar, in the US, there should be some interest in the October housing starts and building permits data, especially following Fed Chair Powell’s recent comments acknowledging a slowdown in the housing market and yesterday’s homebuilder data. Away from that, the BoE’s Carney is due to appear before the Parliament’s Treasury Committee to discuss the Inflation Report, while the ECB’s Nouy and Bundesbank’s Weidmann are both scheduled to speak at separate events.
US Event Calendar
DB's Jim Reid concludes the overnight wrap
With the sell-off of the last 24 hours we have now traded through the last of our YE 2018 top level credit spread forecasts as US HY widened 6bps to +424bps (YE 2018 forecast was 420). We still think US HY is the most expensive part of the EUR & US credit universe but as discussed above, last night we’ve become more optimistic on all credit in the near-term after what has been the worst week of the year. Credit massively under-performed equities last week but equities caught up on the downside yesterday. The sell-off was underpinned by the FANG names selling off, an accounting scandal emerging at Nissan, oil swinging around and the US housing market spooked by weak data.
Just on the market moves first, the NASDAQ and NYFANG indexes slumped -3.03% and -4.28% yesterday, registering their fourth and third worst days of the year, respectively. Facebook and Apple fell -5.72% and -3.96% respectively, as the sector remains pressured amid a slew of negative PR and the spectre of stricter government regulation. Over the weekend, Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an interview that “the free market is not working” and that new regulation is “inevitable”. This negatively impacted highly-valued social media companies. Twitter and Snapchat traded down -5.02% and -6.78% respectively. The tech sector was further pressured after the WSJ reported that Apple had cut production orders in recent weeks for the new model iPhones, with chipmakers broadly trading lower and Philadelphia semiconductor index shedding -3.86%. The S&P 500 and DOW also slumped -1.66% and -1.56% respectively while in Europe the STOXX 600 turned an early gain of +0.71% into a loss of -0.73%. In credit, cash markets were 2bps and 11bps wider for Euro IG and HY and 2bps and 6bps in the US. CDX IG and HY were, however, 3bps and 11bps wider, respectively. Elsewhere, WTI oil first tested breaking through $55/bbl yesterday, after Russia stopped short of committing to supply cuts, before recovering to close +0.52% at $56.76.
Bond markets were relatively quiet, with Treasuries and Bunds ending -0.4bps and +0.6bps, respectively, albeit masking bigger intraday moves. BTP yields rose +10.6bps to 3.597%, within 10 basis points of their recent closing peak, as rhetoric between Italian officials and their European peers continued to intensify. Finance Ministers from Austria and the Netherlands separately spoke publicly about their concerns, and expressed their hope that the European Commission will loyally enforce the fiscal rules. Italian Finance Minister Tria tried to calm conditions by framing the disagreement as relatively minor, though he also accused the Commission of being biased against expansionary policies, which he argued are needed to avert a macro slowdown.
Back to credit, as we highlighted yesterday, the recent weakness in the asset class has become a talking point for broader markets and while our view is now that value is starting to emerge, there are an increasing number of idiosyncratic stories plaguing the market. There were a couple more examples yesterday with the aforementioned story about Nissan removing its chairman after being arrested for violations of financial law. This caused Renault’s CDS to widen +25.0bps (equity down -8.43%), while Vallourec bonds dropped 15pts after falling 11pts on Friday as concerns mount about the company’s rising leverage in the wake of recent results. Like we’ve see in equity markets, it does feel like credits are now getting punished with sharp moves in the wake of negative headlines Certainly something to watch, but as we said above, credit is now much more attractively priced than it has been for some time.
From steel tubing to Downing Street, where we’ve actually had a rare temporary lull for Brexit headlines over the last 24 hours, although behind the scenes it does look we’re getting closer to the threshold for a confidence vote in PM May with the Times yesterday reporting that “senior Brexiteers” had told reporters that they had “firm pledges” from over 50 MPs to submit letters. As a reminder, 48 are needed to trigger the process. Looking further out, yesterday DB’s Oliver Harvey published a report arguing that there is still a path towards an orderly Brexit based on the existing Withdrawal Agreement should May survive a confidence vote. This path is provided by the political declaration on the future economic relationship. The latter has yet to be negotiated, and as the EU27 and UK recognise in the joint statement, the existing temporary customs arrangement (TCA) already provides a basis for a future economic relationship. Oli argues that the UK should push for the political declaration on the future relationship to explicitly commit the UK to a form of Brexit that might be described as “Norway plus.” The temporary customs arrangement would become permanent, but under the governance framework of UK membership of the EEA and EFT. The UK should tie the political declaration on the future relationship to the good faith clause in the existing Withdrawal Agreement, meaning that if negotiations were not pursued on these lines after the transition period had begun, the UK could withhold payments from the EU27. This would help to allay concerns from across the political divide that the UK would be “trapped” in a sub optimal customs union with the EU27.
Meanwhile, to complicate matters, Bloomberg has reported that the EU is mulling over issuing a series of separate statements on Brexit on Sunday, in addition to the Withdrawal Agreement and the Political Declaration. This comes after pressure from some EU countries not to appease any additional UK demands. Elsewhere, the SUN has reported that the PM May has drawn up a secret plan to scrap the Irish backstop arrangement in an attempt to win over angry Tory Brexiteers after a meeting with them yesterday. However, if a mutually agreeable solution couldn’t be found over the last couple of years, it seems tough to imagine one was finally found yesterday afternoon. We’ll see.
Further adding to the complexity of where Brexit heads, last night the DUP abstained on the UK finance bill, which implements the budget. This stops short of their prior threat to actively vote against the legislation, but is still a surprise and signals that further political turbulence between PM May and the DUP is likely. The bill only just scraped through. Sterling finished +0.14% yesterday and this morning is trading flattish (+0.02%) in early trade.
Sentiment more broadly in Asia is following Wall Street’s lead with almost all markets trading in a sea of red. The Nikkei (-1.25%, with Nissan Motors down as much as -5.41% and Mitsubishi Motors -6.71%), Hang Seng (-1.84%), Shanghai Comp (-1.63%) and Kospi (-0.96%) are all down along with most other markets. Elsewhere, futures on S&P 500 (-0.29%) are extending losses as we type.
Back to yesterday, where as we mentioned at the top, weak US homebuilder sentiment survey data played its part in the moves for markets. The November NAHB housing market index tumbled to 60 from 68 in October after expectations had been for just a 1pt drop. That’s the lowest reading since August 2016 and biggest one-month drop since February 2014. The details weren’t much better and falls into line with the expectation of a softer outlook for housing. As you’ll see in the day ahead we’ve got more housing data in the US today so worth keeping an eye on even if the October data for starts could be distorted by Hurricane Michael.
As far as the day ahead is concerned, we’re fairly light on data today with Q3 employment stats in France, October PPI in Germany and November CBI total orders data in the UK the only releases of note. In the US, there should be some interest in the October housing starts and building permits data, especially following Fed Chair Powell’s recent comments acknowledging a slowdown in the housing market and yesterday’s homebuilder data. Away from that, the BoE’s Carney is due to appear before the Parliament’s Treasury Committee to discuss the Inflation Report, while the ECB’s Nouy and Bundesbank’s Weidmann are both scheduled to speak at separate events.

SPECTACULAR NUMBERS

Watching Wall Street boast its best start to a year in over a decade, investors are turning their focus to the fourth quarter earnings season, with results beginning to trickle in this week. Traders are focusing on the recent U.S. tax overhaul, which could provide breathtaking numbers, but it will not affect stock prices much.
ECONOMIES
German factory orders in Europe's biggest economy slipped by 0.4% in November after three months of gains. The dip was largely due to fluctuations in bulk orders but the overall trend remains positive. China's forex reserves posted an eleventh straight monthly increase in December, $20.7B, taking the full-year increase of the world's largest foreign-currency stockpile to $129B.
The FED should raise interest rates three times this year, given the already strong economy will get a boost from tax cuts.
ARAMCO’s 5% IS FOR SALE
Aligning its strategy with peers, Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX), CEO Ben van Beurden said that growth of competitor Shell's (RDS.A) oil and gas operations in the next decade will depend on shale production. On what else?! Candies? What a discovery! Saudi Aramco and some of the kingdom's biggest companies said they'll pay Saudi staff more money, matching a royal order amid rising prices. Saudi Arabia seeks to sell as much as 5% of Aramco.
CRYPTO
The SEC has received a request to allow five bitcoin-related ETFs to be listed on Arca, a secondary marketplace on the NYSE. The instruments, are not tied to the price of the cryptocurrency itself, but would track bitcoin futures.
AT&T BACKS DOWN
AT&T (T) is backing away from a plan to sell phones made by Chinese handset giant Huawei, on the eve of a big announcement of the deal. The deal that Huawei was set to announce tomorrow would have been its first partnership with a major U.S. carrier, but AT&T has changed its mind. So far it is not clear why AT&T backed down, but there are two issues occur. Are Huawei's phones carry spyware? Is it because the US wants to have domestic competition? At one point we’ll have the answer.
THERE ARE NO JEDIS IN CHINA
$36 million in third-week grosses, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Sony) finally toppled Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Disney) from the top of the box-office charts. Disney made an impressive $1.2 billion, but it is far from the estimated $2 billion. It seems that China has no Jedis, the movie made only 26% of expectations in the country. The Force is weak in China.
NVIDIA, VOLKSWAGEN, UBER, AI
Making further gains in the autonomous vehicle industry, Nvidia (NVDA) is partnering with Uber and Volkswagen on AI platforms. So far, 320 companies involved in self-driving cars - whether software developers, automakers, or sensor and mapping companies - are using Nvidia Drive, formerly branded as the Drive PX2, proven that there is more than cryptomining to the company!
WHIRLPOOL KICKS OFF CES2018
Apple (AAPL) Watch users will soon have the ability to control Whirlpool (WHR) appliances through the wearable. Whirlpool announced the development at CES and said the compatibility would come later this year to 20 connected appliances. Whirlpool says Amazon (AMZN) Alexa and Google (GOOGC) Assistant voice controls will also arrive in 2018.
SPACEX - THE FIRST LAUNCH OF 2018
SpaceX successfully launched a secret U.S. government payload called Zuma on Sunday and landed its rocket back on Earth. The Falcon 9 powered a spacecraft made by Northrop Grumman, which was sent into low-Earth orbit. SpaceX is now looking towards its next challenge, launching the Falcon Heavy - its largest rocket to date - at the end of January, meanwhile Tesla’s stock price soared higher.
#DAILY PICK
Amazon (AMZN) Alexa Onboard was introduced yesterday. Another green day.
Electronic Arts (EA) is upgraded to Buy, new PT is $130.
Applied Materials (AMAT) also got an upgrade, double bottom formed, ready to rock!
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) had great presentation at JPM Healthcare conference. Climbing steady.
PayPal (PYPL) one day transfer, instant debit card transfer. Smells like blockchain integration. But who cares?! $86 on the way. Tight stop people!
FX WORLD
Not a lot happened on Monday, mostly momentum trading was possible. It doesn’t seem to be busy today either, still look for the correct entry points! The EURUSD initially took off to the upside, then broke down to the 1.20 area. 1.19 offers support, where the pair can find buyers and clear the 1.21 level. The GBPUSD didn’t do a lot, which is a sign that it is trying to break out. 1.365 offers resistance, if we break above, the pair will aim higher. 1.3333 is supportive underneath. The USDJPY did a lot of back and forth move during Monday, but couldn’t clear 113.5. Expect pull backs, which will offer good entry points, the pair eventually will break out on top! 112 is kind of an absolut floor.

Disney made an impressive $1.2 billion, but it is far from the estimated $2 billion. It seems that China has no Jedis, the movie made only 26% of expectations in the country. The Force is weak in China.
